 Tony Orlando is a bona fide star! Over the
years, he’s gained worldwide success as a singer, a TV star, and an
entertainer. But in one area of his life, he considered himself a
dismal failure: Tony was unable to keep his weight under control. By
the time he was in his early 60s, the performer who made his musical
mark with such songs as “Knock Three Times,” and “Tie a Yellow
Ribbon” saw his weight pass the 300-pound mark.
“I was ashamed of myself,” he said. “I was literally ashamed that I
let myself go like that, and for so long, I didn’t try to take any
responsibility for losing the weight…Being overweight is terribly
embarrassing. Being overweight is stressful, really, and it’s a
feeling that no one really ever wants to feel.”
Tony was a teen idol in the early sixties and a mega-superstar in
the seventies as Tony Orlando and Dawn, enjoying huge hit records,
arena shows and the highly popular weekly variety show which ran for
three years on CBS. As his popularity grew, Tony’s weight began to
climb, finally creeping up over 300 pounds.
Being overweight began to affect Tony’s self-confidence. “Hey, let
me tell you something: I was afraid to dance. I was afraid to walk
out on stage. I actually doubted myself to the point where I didn’t
even want to do a television show,” he admitted. “In the
entertainment business, you’ve got to be thinner or you don’t get
the work.”
Friends and fans were concerned about his weight and told him so. “I
used to have people walk up to me at the airport when I was 103
pounds heavier and go, ‘Hey, Tony, what happened to you? You used to
be so thin. You used to be so cute.’” While the reaction of his fans
was hard, nothing for Tony was more difficult than the concern his
daughter had. “My daughter looked at me and said, ‘Daddy, I’m
worried about you!’ I have a very bright little girl, my Jenny, and
I could see it took everything in her power to come and tell her
daddy the truth about where he was in his life and with his weight.
That had an impact on me, and I didn’t know what to do.”
Over the years, Tony had tried a number of weight loss programs and
diets, but none of them ever worked. After Tony’s weight topped the
300-mark, he was too embarrassed to tell anyone how much he weighed.
“If you asked me then what I weighed, I’d say, about 290 pounds. I
would just lie about my weight.”
Then in 2006, after seeing a Nutri System ad featuring his old
friend, football quarterback, Dan Marino, Tony made a call that he
says “changed my life”—he called Nutri System and began working the

As Tony began losing weight, he became a tireless advocate for

For Tony, that renewed sense of self-respect is translating into new
opportunities for performing. “People are calling in and saying,
‘Hey, Tony! Would you like to do this television show? Would you
like to do this movie?’ I haven’t gotten calls like that in years.”
Fans are still expressing their opinions, too. “Here is the reaction
I get from fans now. This is great: “’Tony, you look like you did
back with Tony Orlando and Dawn on the television show when we used
to sit around the house and watch you with the whole family. Look at
you! You look cute again!’”
But it’s the reaction of his family that Tony has valued the most.
“You know, I think I look better these days, but more importantly,
my wife does.” His kids have noticed, too. “My son, Jon, said, ‘Boy,
Dad, you lost all that weight!’ He calls his friends and says, ‘My
Dad is now a 34 waist.’ The most important words I’ve heard from my
daughter are, ‘Daddy, now you’ll see me get married. You’ll see your
grandchildren. I was worried about you, but I’m not any more.’”
Tony says that when he looks at a picture of himself more than 100
pounds heavier than he is now, he said he thinks of Nutri System. “I
